A Statement on Recent Shootings in Minnesota
The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) is deeply saddened and concerned by the recent shooting in Minnesota that took the life of a devoted public servant Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. The heinous acts also injured several individuals, including Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence, and we offer our full support to Representative Hortman and her family and Senator Hoffman and his family during this difficult time.
Speaker Hortman was a champion for the disability community, working alongside disability advocates to ensure services and supports for the disability community were always top of mind. Additionally, amongst her many acts of service and accomplishments, she also trained service dogs to support people with physical disabilities and veterans with PTSD.
Senator Hoffman served with distinction as Chair of the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities from 2015 to 2020. During his tenure and throughout his public service, he has been a tireless and compassionate advocate for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). His leadership has been instrumental in advancing inclusive policies, securing critical services, and upholding the rights and dignity of individuals with IDD across Minnesota.
Senator Hoffman is not only a respected policymaker but also a trusted ally and friend to the disability community. His voice and commitment have made a lasting impact, and we are grateful for his ongoing support. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
Violence of any kind has no place in our society. We urge our elected leaders, communities, and advocates to come together in the face of tragedy. Not only to support those who are hurting, but to recommit ourselves to building a more inclusive, safe, and just society for all. We stand in solidarity with Senator Hoffman, his family, the Minnesota Council on Developmental Disabilities, and the entire community impacted by this terrible event.
We wish Representative Hortman’s family and Senator Hoffman’s family strength and healing at this incredibly difficult time.
