Projects

Goal 1
Increase the awareness and community integration of people with developmental disabilities (DD) who are aging. This goal was determined by a statewide needs assessment, numerous discussions with SAT members, and the personal experiences of self-advocate members of the State Alliance Team (SAT).
Highlights/Milestones Achieved
During Year One, the New York State Council on Developmental Disabilities (CDD) distributed a statewide needs assessment to determine the most significant challenges that people with developmental disabilities (DD) who are aging face on a regular basis. The needs assessment was in the form of an online survey that was available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.
Based on the survey results, the NY SAT decided to focus on the goal to increase awareness and community integration of people with DD who are aging.
The NY SAT is currently developing a short training video for community center staff and volunteers in hopes of achieving this goal. This idea came from the personal experiences of the self-advocate members of the SAT.
The NY SAT sent out a survey titled “Improving the Lives of Aging New Yorkers with Developmental Disabilities” to understand how New York can better support aging people with disabilities. The survey received 1,005 responses, with 60% being family members or caregivers of a person with DD. Some key findings include:
