With the 117th Congress being sworn in just days ago, H.R. 1, the For the People Act package has been reintroduced in Congress today. The For the People Act expands Americans’ access to the ballot box, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and strengthen ethics rules for public servants. It protects voting rights and limits the corrosive effect of big money in politics. This landmark legislation gets at the heart of many systemic problems and creates a renewed confidence and trust, to take part in our democracy.
NACDD supports the voting rights provisions H.R. 1, as it will help ensure that people with I/DD are granted a safe and equal right to take part in the election process. Every voice should be heard, and every vote should be counted. It is imperative that everyone has equal access to their polling place. The House should pass it immediately, the Senate should follow, and President-elect Biden should sign it as soon as he takes office.
