The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) extends its support for the recent ruling by the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This ruling represents a significant step forward in ensuring equal access and opportunities for individuals with disabilities, including those with developmental disabilities, across the United States.
The ADA was enacted with the fundamental principle of prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities and promoting their full participation in all aspects of society. Title II of the ADA specifically addresses the provision of public services, ensuring that state and local governments, including their agencies and departments, do not discriminate against individuals with disabilities in their programs, services, and activities.
The recent ruling by the DOJ reaffirms the importance of upholding the principles and protections outlined in Title II of the ADA. By clarifying the obligations of state and local governments to ensure effective communication and access for individuals with disabilities, this ruling strengthens the foundation of inclusivity and accessibility that is essential for our communities to thrive.
“As an organization dedicated to promoting the rights, inclusion, and self-determination of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, NACDD commends the DOJ for taking action to uphold the integrity of Title II of the ADA. We believe that this ruling will help to advance our shared goal of creating communities where everyone, regardless of ability, can fully participate, contribute, and succeed,” says Jill Jacobs, Executive Director of NACDD
