The recent LA fires have left a devastating impact on the disability community, affecting over 43,000 people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (I/DD), including 1,461 who were evacuated. Tragically, they lost one person with I/DD and his father, and over 200 homes of people with I/DD have been destroyed.
The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) and The Colin Farrell Foundation (CFF) are joining together to collect supplies for people with I/DD and their families who have been impacted by the LA Fires through an Amazon Wishlist. The supplies will be sent directly to the California State Developmental Disabilities Council (SCDD) which will distribute the supplies through its Los Angeles office distribution network.
“Californians deeply thank NACDD, the Colin Farrell Foundation, and all people who want to support those with developmental disabilities and their families during this time of utter devastation,” said Aaron Carruthers Executive Director of the California State Developmental Disabilities Council. “We will quickly get what you give into peoples’ hands.”
SCDD advocates for 615,000 people with I/DD across the state and their families, including 152,000 in Los Angeles.
Here’s how you can help.
SCDD asked people what they need, and NACDD and CFF have opened an Amazon Wishlist to encourage people to buy essential supplies for those impacted.
People still need air purifiers, sensory items, diapers across all age ranges, cleaning wipes, and menstrual products. The wishlist will be updated as community needs change.
“In times of tragedy, the only thing we can do as a people, is come together in the spirit and strength of community. The Los Angeles fires have made such togetherness and support utterly essential,” said Colin Farrell, Board President, The Colin Farrell Foundation. “Partnering with NACDD and the California State DD Council during this time of crisis allows the Colin Farrell Foundation the opportunity to support individuals with I/DD and their families, as they care for one another and begin the long process of rebuilding their lives.”
NACDD and CFF will continue collecting donated items until all needs are met.
“Extreme weather events have a profound impact on communities, and that includes the disability community,” said Jill Jacobs, executive director of NACDD. “By donating essential supplies, we can all play a part in supporting those affected as they begin to rebuild their lives. We are thankful for the partnership with The Colin Farrell Foundation and California’s State Developmental Disabilities Council to get individuals and families the support they need.”
